Abstract

The Church stood at the centre of medieval European life. It was a place of worship, but it was also a school, a court, a landowner, a helper of the poor, and a powerful voice in politics. For many ordinary people, the Church explained the meaning of birth, marriage, illness, death, sin, and salvation. It gave hope in a world where war, hunger, disease, and insecurity were common. At the same time, the Church did not only comfort people; it also directed their behaviour, collected taxes, influenced rulers, and punished those who openly rejected its teaching. This article examines the main ways in which the medieval Church shaped people’s daily life, including religion, education, family, charity, art, politics, and social control.
