Abstract

The exponential growth of data across scientific and commercial domains has created an urgent need for interoperability - the capacity for metadata to be exchanged and understood across disparate systems without loss of meaning. This article examines the imperative of metadata interoperability and the critical role of standards in unifying global data. Drawing on recent developments across scientific research and industry, including comprehensive surveys of metadata practices in machine learning and genomics, large-scale assessments of semantic artefacts in environmental sciences, and emerging collaborative initiatives such as the Open Semantic Interchange and national research infrastructure harmonization efforts, the analysis reveals both substantial progress and persistent challenges. Crosswalk analyses demonstrate significant consensus on core descriptive elements across domains while also revealing heterogeneity in implementation approaches. Assessments of semantic artefacts against FAIR principles show that while many resources meet key interoperability criteria, concerning gaps remain in licensing, versioning, and maintenance declarations. The emergence of AI-ready metadata standards, exemplified by Croissant for machine learning datasets and its integration with the Model-Context-Protocol, signals a paradigm shift toward machine-actionable metadata that enables intelligent systems to autonomously discover and utilize data resources. The article concludes that sustainable interoperability requires not merely technical standardization but also robust governance structures, clear licensing frameworks, and community engagement. The path forward lies in building bridges between standards through careful harmonization, crosswalk development, and shared core profiles that balance the diversity of community needs with the imperative of interoperability.
